C.P. Redding Portrait

The Artist

Behind the Music

Born and raised in Connecticut, my life in music began at an early age, shaped largely by family and faith. My father, George M. Redding, was a professional Gospel Quartet singer for many years, and music was a constant presence in our home. He regularly brought my brother and me to his group's rehearsals, where we absorbed harmony, discipline, and the joy of collective sound almost by osmosis. Some of my most vivid childhood memories are of long family drives filled with singing—three voices trading leads and harmonies, effortlessly and endlessly.

At the age of four, I began singing and creating vocal harmony arrangements alongside my older brother, Preston. By ten, I was studying percussion formally, developing into an accomplished drummer and percussionist while also learning keyboards. Throughout my school years, I remained deeply involved in music, performing in the school orchestra and singing in chorus, further strengthening my foundation as both a vocalist and instrumentalist.

At twenty, I was fortunate to begin touring professionally with mainstream acappella groups including The Jabberwocks and The Redding Bros. During those years, I had the privilege of opening for nationally recognized artists such as Chicago, The Judds, Reba McEntire, and The Four Tops—experiences that refined my professionalism and broadened my musical perspective.

After relocating to the Richmond, Virginia area in 2007, I formed my current band, The Groove Motive, in 2009. Since then, the band has grown into one of the Mid-Atlantic region's premier party and dance acts, performing consistently up and down the East Coast and earning a reputation for high-energy, polished live shows.

My musical style reflects an eclectic range of influences, including classic quartet Gospel, jazz, doo-wop, pop, R&B, and rock. I have been composing and recording music since elementary school, beginning with rudimentary tape-deck "bounce" recordings—technically flawed, but musically sound. The purchase of my first four-track recorder was transformative, finally allowing me to capture the layered arrangements I heard in my head with clarity and control.

When not performing with The Groove Motive or recording in my home studio, I remain active as a session vocalist, producer, and voiceover artist, continuing a lifelong commitment to musical creativity and craftsmanship.
